A brief history
Recollets were the first Christian missionaries to reach Quebec, arriving in Tadoussac in May 1615 with Samuel de Champlain. Father Joseph Le Caron was the first missionary to Huronia in 1615, travelling down the French River. He developed the first dictionary of the Huron language, which has since been lost. The Recollets were a reformed branch of the Franciscan order. There is a lovely waterfall on the French River, named Recollet Falls after the missionary order. It can be reached by hiking from the French River Visitor Centre.
