A brief history

The Hudson Bay Company received its charter in May 1670, from Prince Rupert, nephew of Charles 1 and first cousin to Charles 11, of England. The HBC was granted, for its operations, what was called Rupert’s Land and became the largest private landowner in world history. It ran a vast fur trading empire, mainly based on beaver pelts sold to Europe, for hat-making. The fortunes made from the fur trade would propel Canada into modernity. The HBC was founded by an Englishman one might suppose? It was actually created because of a proposal put forward by two enterprising Frenchmen, Radisson and Groseillier. One of the many paradox’s of Canada’s fascinating history
